Education, training and information

The NCT runs courses for parents, both before and after birth, led by NCT trained workers. We deliver practical training sessions for the NHS, to enhance and develop the skills of training health

My experience is probably quite different to that of other student breastfeeding counsellors as I am a grandmother looking at retirement from my day job, whereas all the others in my tutor group are young mums, some still breastfeeding and some holding down jobs as well. However, this hasn’t been a barrier for me as I’ve made so many new friends and really widened my horizons.

We are famous for the expertise of our NCT specialist workers, who run our antenatal classes, breastfeeding helpline and drop-in sessions, and postnatal courses. Our flexible education programmes are tailored to your needs and can be completed over a three year period. You only need your own parental experience to become an antenatal teacher or postnatal leader, or six months breastfeeding experience to train as a breastfeeding counsellor.

We also produce evidence-based information to enable parents to make informed choices. If you work with parents, the NCT can help you to deliver engaging, positive and informative services that support people from pregnancy and birth through all the changes of being a parent. With a national network of branches and trained specialist workers, we can offer you a wide range of services tailored to the needs of parents.

We can:

  • provide practical training for staff
  • deliver projects under contract using our expertise in parent-centred services, or
  • work in partnership with your organisation’s staff, adding value through our experience and specialist training.

The NCT’s parent-centred approach is particularly helpful in engaging hard-to-reach groups. We have experience of working with young parents, new dads, and providing direct services that support parents who feel overwhelmed or depressed after the birth of their baby.
